MANILA,Philippines — Comedian Stephen Colbert has made President Rodrigo Duterte a punch line on his show for segment on US President Barack Obama’s “weekend of insults.”
On Tuesday, Colbert opened his late-night television talk show, with a monologue about the issues surrounding Obama at present. And of course, Duterte’s profane outburst toward Obama was not spared.
“He was supposed to meet today with Rodrigo Duterte, the president of the Philippines. Hopefully to get to the bottom of why Philippines is spelled with a PH but Filipino is spelled with an F. That is PH-ed up in my opinion,” Colbert joked.
His punch line was immediately returned with applause from the audience.
Colbert continued his gag line by recalling how Duterte called Obama the “son of a whore,” when the US President expressed his concern over the mass executions of the drug offenders in the Philippines.
“It turns out that President Duterte has a bit of a ‘Duterte-mouth,'”he added.
The bilateral meeting between the two presidents was canceled after Duterte labeled Obama a “son of a whore,” an epithet he previously used against Philip Goldberg, the US ambassador to the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Obama and Duterte had a short encounter on Wednesday in a holding room during a summit of regional leaders in Laos. — Alixandra Caole Vila
