With two senators likely to comprise the new minority bloc at the Senate during the incoming 17th Congress on July 25, 2016, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV said he is giving way for Sen. Francis Escudero to become the next minority leader.
“I will give way to Chiz,” Trillanes said in a text message.
Trillanes earlier in the day congratulated Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III for getting the support of the majority of 17 senators which composed the Liberal Party, Nationalist People’s Coalition and other political allies.
“I congratulate Sen. Koko Pimentel for being chosen as the Senate President of the 17th Congress. I am confident that under his watch, the Senate’s integrity and independence won’t be compromised,” Trillanes added.
“Having said that, I will be joining the minority in order to freely pursue my advocacies,” he said.
Escudero said he is joining the minority as a matter of principle and belief. He said he will not back out from the responsibility if he is by chance, chosen to head the new Senate minority bloc.
