Mayor Rodrigo Duterte could spring a surprise and show up at his proclamation as President-elect on May 30 despite his repeated pronouncements about holing up in Davao City until he takes his oath next month, incoming Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said.
In a press conference at Batasang Pambansa complex on Friday (May 27), Aguirre expressed optimism that Duterte will attend his proclamation.
He cited as basis for his statement the incoming President’s own disclaimer about believing his statements which sound too good to be true.
“He said he will not attend diba [didn’t he]? I believe he will attend. Sabi naman niya ‘wag siyang paniwalaan kapag improbable sinasabi niya [He did say not to believe him when he says something improbable],” Aguirre said.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, head of the Senate contingent for canvassing, earlier said Duterte’s presence at his proclamation is not required under the law although lawmakers highly encourage it.
Duterte will be proclaimed as President-elect while Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo will officially be named Vice President-elect when Congress reconvenes in a joint session on the afternoon of May 30.
